One evening,
my father asked me if I would
like to become a ghost bride…
Li Lan, a young Chinese woman, lives in 1890s colonial Malaya with her quietly ruined father, who returns one evening with a proposition — the fabulously wealthy Lim family want Li Lan to marry their son. The only problem is, he’s dead.
After a fateful visit to the opulent Lim mansion, Li Lan finds herself haunted not only by her ghostly would-be suitor, but also by her desire for the Lim’s handsome new heir, Tian Bai. Night after night, she is drawn into the shadowy parallel world of the Chinese afterlife, with its ghost cities, paper funeral offerings, vengeful spirits and monstrous bureaucracy. Li Lan must uncover the Lim family’s darkest secrets, before she is trapped in this ghostly world forever.
“Choo’s clear and charming style creates an alternate reality where the stakes are just as high as in the real world, combining grounded period storytelling with the supernatural.”
Publishers Weekly
“The Ghost Bride begins as a historical novel but takes an unexpected turn into a fantastical, ghost-and-murder mystery. What makes all this work is the sumptuous world of Chinese émigré culture and the love story that flows under it all—the kind so full of longing, the pages practically sigh as you turn each one.” Oprah.com’s Book of the Week
“…from whodunit to ghost story to coming-of-age to romance, there is enough plot to fill several more novels. But the beguiling tale of Li Lan navigating both the land of the dead and the territory of her own heart makes you hope Choo is the author who writes all of them.”
USA Today
“‘The Ghost Bride’, an impressive first novel, takes readers on one of the wildest rides since Alice fell down the rabbit hole.” San Jose Mercury News
“This first foray into novel writing was worth the wait—The Ghost Bride is a sublime and mysterious page-turner, full of intrigue and the complications of life on earth and beyond.” Kirkus feature
“Choo’s fascinating debut . . . rich in Chinese folklore, mores and the supernatural…intriguing and enlightening. A haunting debut.” Kirkus Reviews
“Choo’s remarkably strong and arresting first novel…is sure to garner much well-deserved attention.” Booklist

loving this book! its an amazing read. What historical aspects intrigued you the most to write such an ingenious novel?
Thank you – I’m so glad you’re enjoying it! All over Malaysia there are remnants of old buildings, and when I was a child, I visited a derelict Chinese mansion in Penang which was the inspiration for the Lim family mansion – rooms upon empty rooms with grass growing up through the stones and the roof fallen in. I’ve never forgotten it! 🙂
The Ghost Bride was well worth to read. The very good book I’ve read so far. Thank You for writing such a great book and I’m hoping for a sequel too as much as others! And because of your book, I started again my writing hobby and yess, I’ve created a blog~! My first post was none other than a review of The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo 🙂 … so, Thank You.

Hi Jehan,
Thank you so much for your lovely and thoughtful review – I’m delighted that you enjoyed the book and that it inspired you to keep writing (I too will try my best to finish up my second novel)! Good luck with your blog and happy further adventures in reading 🙂
What a lovely book! Completely wowed the whole way through! And a California writer! (I’m in Silicon Valley) Congratulations and I can’t wait for your next book.
Thank you for your kind words – I’m so glad you enjoyed it and will try my best to finish my next book (which is getting quite hefty)! Must. finish. soon… 🙂
I just devoured The Ghost Bride! It was wonderfully satisfying! I do hope you will make a sequel that tells of her life that she chose.
Thank you so much! I’m delighted that you enjoyed it and am definitely open to writing a sequel in future 🙂
The Ghost Bride was great, I really liked it! Er Lang and Li Lan, oh gosh I fell in love with their relationship. I loved the concept, it definitely reminded me of the movie “Spirited Away”. (which is one of my favorite movies) I’m glad I found this book, hopefully…you’ll make a sequel? I would love to see more Li Lan and Er Lang ; _ ;
Hi Courtney,
I’m delighted that you enjoyed it – thank you for your kind encouragement! “Spirited Away” is one of my favorite movies too, hooray! 🙂
Hi! I’m from Brazil, so sorry if i make some english mistakes, i’m not very good at english and google is helping me, so…
Well your book arrived to Brazil in May of this year (2015) if i not making any mistake, and by the history of the cover already got my attention, i was dying to read the book, but anyway i was not expecting that kind of history … and thanks to you i was very much wrong, the book is simply fantastic, i couldn’t stop reading, you made me stay reading i didn’t have the strength to let it go, the way your writing keeps the reader interested is… i have not words for it! The world you created, the characters, the way they interact i can say i’m in love… and very happy because Li Lan ends up with the guy i was cheering for , Er Lang is one of the best characters ever created, he has something that make us be curious about him!
I hope more of your books, and sequels of “The Ghost Bride”!!
And congratulations for this wonderful and terrific book!!
Hi Thales,
Thank you so much – how wonderful to hear from a reader in Brazil! I love the cover of the Brazilian edition which was designed by Dark Side (and was a surprise to me as well!), and I’m so glad that you enjoyed the ending, which I wrote and rewrote a few different ways. I will do my best to keep writing. 🙂
[…] The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo […]
I just finished reading ‘The Ghost Bride’ last night and I loved it so much that I’m re-reading portions of it today. Your writing style is so descriptive and evocative that it immersed me in a world that I’ve never read before. In fact, before this book, I knew next to nothing about Malaya in the 19th century. Not only did I come to know about the culture and the people but also the wonderfully imaginative after-life ‘Plains of the Dead’. I loved the spunky Li Lan and the relationship she shared with Er Lang! I know I’m repeating what others have requested, but please do write a sequel with more of the delightful banter between these two great characters! That will be another book which I will treasure!
Hi Dipa,
Thank you for your kind encouragement – I’m delighted that you enjoyed learning about historical Malaya, as well as Li Lan and Er Lang’s relationship! I had a lot of fun writing their scenes together, as originally Er Lang was supposed to have a rather minor role but he kept on invading the book… 😉
Hello Yangsze,
I’m so excited to hear back from you! It is so nice of you to respond personally to all your readers 🙂
Just wanted to mention something I missed out on my last post: I’m from India and after reading your book, I found a lot of similarities between the Hindu concept of after-life and the Chinese concept. We too leave food offerings for ancestors. Bed and clothing are also offered to the dead as part of the rituals following a family member’s death. Strange how cultures coincide somewhere. I think this is a result of a lot of trade that happened between countries in South East Asia post 15th century. I remember you even mentioned some Indian roadside shopowner in your book.
All the best to you for all your future endeavors!! Please keep writing 🙂
Hi, I’m from Brazil and i just finished the Ghost Bride, and it’s a lovely history. And I’m asking if have any chance that have another book telling more about Li Lan and Er Lang after. And I dream about this book become a TV Drama, or something like that. ❤
Hi Natalia,
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I’m currently working on my second novel, another strange tale of dead people set in colonial Malaya, but I’m certainly open to writing a sequel in future. And yes, how fun it would be if The Ghost Bride became a TV drama or an anime! 😉
Any idea when the new novel will be out? I just can’t wait!!!
(I’ve got my novel out on Amazon BTW, “The Dangerously Truthful Diary of a Sicilian Housewife”)
You know, The Ghost Bride got under my skin so deeply that I STILL sometimes have dreams about being in that weird ghosty place…
I agree with Natalia, it would make an abolutely stunning movie. Has your agent got good contacts for film rights?
Ooh! I was so excited to hear that your book is out that I rushed off and bought it on my Kindle! Am looking forward to some hilarious reading on the plane when I go traveling next month 🙂 Congratulations on publishing it – I shall be telling my friends all about it!
Thank you! I hope you’ll love it! 😀
Hi Fernanda,
Thank you for reading my book – I’m delighted that you enjoyed it, and will try my best to keep writing! So far, it isn’t a series, but I’m open to writing a sequel. 🙂
I started reading your book and I couldn’t put it down until I finished…. It’s amazing I love it. I was just wondering when your next book would come out, and if it was a sequel to the ghost bride.
Hi Andrea,
I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed it! I am currently working on my next book (literally, as I just set it aside to make a cup of tea!). It’s another strange tale of dead people and superstitions set in colonial Malaya, this time in 1931, and though it isn’t a sequel, I’m definitely open to writing one in the future! 🙂
I always find it tough to come across a book with the right amount of romance and the right amount of supernatural but this book was exactly what I was looking for! It was so satisfying! I also loved that although the main focus of the book was Chinese culture, you mentioned all the other cultures that were around. And now I’m craving more from you! I hope your next novel is going well and thank you for your hard work!
Hi Happy,
Thank you for your kind words! I’m tickled to hear that you enjoyed it – a lot of the cultural research was very interesting to do, especially the parts related to what they were cooking and eating in those days! 🙂
I haven’t read much fiction lately but picked your book up from the sale table at Barnes & Noble on a whim. I hadn’t heard anything about it. Rarely have I enjoyed a book more than this one! I was captivated from the beginning and read it much too quickly. I was reluctant to leave the world of the Ghost Bride! Marvelous in every way. I am recommending it to my four daughters. Thank you so very much. I wish you continued success and will look for more books written by you in the future.
Hi Brenda,
Thank you so much! It’s always fun to pick books up on a whim (I’ve discovered some of my all-time favorite writers, like Jhumpa Lahiri and Rohinton Mistry, this way!) and I’m honored and delighted that you enjoyed it. I will try my best to finish writing my next book 🙂

Nothing pleases my soul more than stumbling across an author that captures my attention and speaks straight to my spirit. I sat down after finishing a series of novels, not sure what to do next. I was scrolling through the books on my ereader and The Ghost Bride caught my attention. 3 hours later I was half way done and I couldn’t put it down, my lids were heavy, my arm was asleep and it was close to 4am. I was still reading. I’ve a bit more to go to finish it and I’m already dreading it being over. Such an amazing book. Thank you. Thank you for introducing me to historical Malay and China (I’m a European Canadian, I know zero.) Thank you for taking me back in time, thank you for showing me the afterlife. It was all magical.
Hi Tyne,
Thank you for your kind words – as a reader myself, I’m so tickled to hear that you stayed up to read it (though sorry to cause lack of sleep)! I hope you were all right the next day. One day you must come and try all the delicious food in Malaysia! 😉

Aloha Ms. Choo! My friend and I are obsessed with your book and we’re praying that you’ll consider writing a sequel to this amazing story. We’re both of Chinese decent and reading ‘The Ghost Bride’ brought back so much childhood memories that we’ve long forgotten about. We also love to eat and read as well. Are we soul sisters or what?! Please… tell us what happens to Li Lan and Er Lang? =**(
Hi Hanh,
I’m so tickled to hear that you both enjoyed it – thank you! And eating and reading is definitely a worthy past time. Sometimes I think there ought to be an event like EatMoReadMo, in which people loll around for a month, reading and eating as much as possible! 😉 As to what happened to Li Lan and Er Lang, I can only say that they probably went on bickering and having many other adventures. Initially I planned to write a whole extra section for the book which dealt with the court case in the Plains of the Dead, but it would have been too long (see my blog post on what happens when your novel gets out of hand)…but I’m definitely open to writing a sequel in future!
Much Mahalos (thank you) Ms. Choo. Your response has made my day (year even)!!! I guess until you can give us the sequel… we’re just going to have to fantasize about the meeting with her & his parents go and whether they have dragon babies. LOL You’ve earned yourself two loyal followers now. I look forward to your next amazing book (& possibly the sequel)! I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and New Years with the family. 😀
Awesome book! I’m addicted to the story.. read it twice in the same week. I hope there will be a sequel on the story about Li Lan and Er Lang.. I’m dying to read the story of them in the strange new land.. please, Yangzhe make it come true.
Hi Qistin,
Thank you very much – I’m delighted that you enjoyed it and will do my best to keep writing. Happy new year! 🙂

Dear YangSze,
First of all I would like to say that I am completely enamoured by your book!! It captivated me to no ends and I love the style of your writing. As a Malaysian, this book fascinated me so much because the setting of the book is something that is familiar to me. The twists and revelation had me gasping and rooting for Li Lan earnestly. After reading your book, it has sparked my passion for writing once more and hopefully one day I will be as good as you 🙂 I am looking forward to your second novel and hope to see you at a book tour soon in Malaysia!
Hi Lydia,
I’m so glad you enjoyed it – what an honor to hear that it encouraged you to write more! I wish you the best of luck in your wonderful writing journey, and hopefully (if I can finish my new novel), I’ll be back in Malaysia to meet readers and makan! 😉
I happened to pick it up on a whim, looking for something to really captivate me and it did. I felt so inspired that I started to draw the faces of Li Lan and Er Lang to the best of your description (Haha!). I am honestly in love the book and hope there will be a second. I felt for Li Lan so much through out the whole book and could relate to her so well. Her character develope was amazing and I hope to see more of their adventures. It has even inspired me to continue to pursue writing. I’ve shared this book with my book-loving friends too! I hope we can see more of their adventures and the best of luck and happiest of wishes to you in everything you do! 😀
Hi Adrianna,
Wow, I’m so honored to hear that the book inspired you to draw and write! That’s so great to hear, and many thanks as well for sharing with your friends. I will do my best to finish my second novel…Must…Finish…Soon! 😉
Dear Yangsze,
I really love your book, `The Ghost Bride` ! You’re are my first favourite author and the book was really beautifully written 😀
I love how you wrote Li Lan and Er Lang in a way very lovely and warm. Oh, and it seems like you’re making a new book? I can’t wait!! I’m sure it will be stunning 🙂
Yangsze, I hope there will be a sequel for The Ghost Bride. I can’t get enough of Er Lang and Li Lan story especially Er Lang family; im curious about his family
Hi Celine,
Thank you for your kind encouragement – I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Yes, I’m working on a new book (finally finished it last week, though I now have to work on edits), and though it isn’t a sequel, it’s another strange and ghostly tale set in 1930s colonial Malaya. But am definitely open to writing a sequel in future though 🙂
Ah that is absolutely fantastic!!!! I cannot wait to read your new book this is the best news
So happy to hear that you have finished a new book, cannot wait to read it! Alessandra xx
Thank you!! Keeping my fingers crossed that my agent likes it too 🙂 Will keep you all posted!
I just finished reading The Ghost Bride and want to let you know that I enjoyed it immensely. I loved your characters and story, and especially enjoyed the setting of Malacca. Along the way, your descriptions and my curiosity caused me to research history and customs, and to learn more about the landmarks you included. The Ghost Bride is mysterious and magical; in many ways a great adventure. I am looking forward to your next book!
Thank you so much, I’m so delighted it was a fun read for you! I hope one day that you can come visit Malaysia and sample some of the delicious food. In the meantime, I will do my best to keep writing 🙂
I have re read your book countless times! It is my all time favourite book and that is saying a lot haha. I love the history and I love the romance it is absolutely amazing and I can’t wait to get my hands on more of your work!!!
I also left a comment back in 2014, as I had re read the book after quite some time… It seems this book has been my altime favourite for quite awhile! And you replied mentioning “another hot Asian guy” which I must admit I am also quite looking forward too as well as the setting and the history! This is brilliant I’m so glad I remembered to check back on your new book 😄
And it may be 1am but that’s not stopping me from reading it once again as it’s been a two or three months! Hahaha
Hi Amy,
Wow, I’m so honored that you are still rereading the book! I also have a few favorite books that I like to reread, so I really appreciate that 🙂 It took me some time to write my rather-too-long next novel, which is now in the hands of my literary agent, but it’s another strange tale of colonial Malaya, complete with murders, dance parties, ghosts, beasts that turn into men, and yes, forbidden love that I hope will also tickle your fancy!
Best wishes,
Yangsze
I was completely enthralled by this book. I could hardly put it down and when I did I could focus on nothing but what would happen in the next chapter. It has been years since I’ve been so completely lost in a book. I am shaking with anticipation for you next book, I see you quickly becoming my new favorite author.
Hi Rachel,
How wonderful to hear that you enjoyed it – thank you so much for your kind words! I’m now in the throes of editing my too-gigantic-too-many-meals second book (after some terrific edits back from my agent!) and trying to cut it down to a manageable size. It’s hard to say goodbye to some of the tasty local snacks and ghostly side stories, but hopefully it will be a better book for the pruning, and one that you’ll find interesting! 🙂
Best wishes,
Yangsze
Mrs. Choo, I stumbled upon your novel in the library one day and I gave it a shot. I am the opposite of regretful. This book was mystical, vibrant, poignant and triumphant all in one go. I tore through it in two days because I always wanted to know what happened next! Please keep doing what you’re doing. I can’t wait for your next!
Hi Ron,
I must confess that hunting through the library stacks is one of my favorite pastimes as well (I’ve discovered some of my favourite authors, like Haruki Murakami, this way), so I was delighted and honored to hear that you enjoyed my book! Thank you for your kind encouragement – I’ll try my best to keep on writing 🙂
Best wishes,
Yangsze

Thank you so much! I’m very happy to hear that you enjoyed it and am certainly open to writing a sequel one day. Am working on edits for very loooong new book, and will try my best 🙂

I love your book The Ghost Bride.
Hi Rebecca,
Thank you for your kind comment! I’m delighted that you enjoyed it – will try my best to keep writing 🙂
Best wishes,

I adored your book – and it’s inspired me to visit Malacca next year! Any pointers as to where I should eat or what I should see?
I look forward to re-reading it, and reading anything else you should write.
Hi Taffy,
How exciting! I’m so delighted that you’re going to visit Melaka next year! If you have time, check out the night market near Jonker St, as well as the Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum, which is made of 3 shophouses put together – great for historical colour! The other thing I try to do when I’m returning from abroad and don’t have my local stomach resistance yet, is to avoid drinking ice/ice drinks. Strangely enough, my bouts of food poisoning have mostly come from ice drinks. Hot food that’s been boiled is usually no problem. I hope you have a wonderful time in Malaysia 🙂
so excited to finally read this, a friend gave me this book, already halfway thru 🙂
Thank you!! I hope you enjoy it 🙂
Really a great book, Mrs. Choo! I can’t put it down until I read it fully for 3 hours (Indonesia version) and then bought again for English version. Still love to read it again and again haha…I love the leve story between Li Lan and Er Lang 🙂
Hi Miekes, how nice to hear from an Indonesian reader! That means a lot to me, and I’m honored that you enjoyed it! 😉
I need to tell you, The ghost bride it’s my favorite book! And believe me, I already read many book haha.
I love you and your history so much, and can’t wait to read others from you… thank you soo much for bring Li Lan to life ❤ love, love love!
Hi Karina, thank you for your kind encouragement! I’m really excited that my second book, THE NIGHT TIGER, will be out February 2019. I’ll be writing an updated blog post about that soon, and hope you enjoy it too 🙂
I loved this book so much I bought it twice! I gave my first copy to a friend but then bought another because I knew I’d want to read it again. I’m hoping for a sequel, hint hint…
Hi Linn, thank you so much – it’s very kind of you! I’ve just finished recording the audio book for my new book, but am certainly open to writing a sequel to Ghost Bride in future 🙂

I loved the ghost bride.
It was a rough start because I was dealing with health issues.
But oh my. I feel like this young girl.
The roads we travel.
The desire to be in between in a sense. Seen and not seen.
Definition of a true introvert.
Looking forward to reading the next book.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad that you enjoyed it! Wishing you all the best.
I just finished the Night Tiger. I loved it. The characters especially. You are truly gifted!
Dear Edith, sorry for the late reply (I just saw this!) — and thank you so very much for your kind words! ❤️

Byee!!
Thank you so much for reading! I believe that there are plans for a Brazilian translation of The Night Tiger soon! 🙂
Greetings from South Florida Ms. Choo! I am writing to let you know I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED listening to your beautifully written book, The Ghost Bride! You are a wonderful storyteller! Your book transported me to a magical place – an alternate reality filled with the perfect blend of romance, intrigue, folklore, history, and intelligence. It was so refreshing that you gave all of your characters, even the not so likable ones, some depth, emotional wounds, and tragic qualities to explain their faulty judgments. I knew it was going to be fabulous from the first few paragraphs, when you went from a colorful description of the politics and blended cultures of Malaysia in the late 1800s to the story of a Chinese festival celebrating celestial lovers involving a cow herd, a weaving maid, and a talking ox. I also really enjoyed the “post script” when you shared your author notes explaining some of the historical meanings behind the Chinese folklores, your creation of the “plane of the dead” and your decisions to stick with the older spellings and dialects from the time period to lend more authenticity to the story line. Very interesting! I am looking forward to reading (listening to) the Night Tiger! I have been in the habit of listening to the audio versions of all the books I have “read” in the last 20 years because I typically have an hour commute to work each way. And in that regard, I thought your voice and the overall audio production of The Ghost Bride was outstanding! It definitely added to my enjoyment of the story. Many thanks!
Warm regards,
Pamela E.
Hi Pamela, thank you so much for your kind words of encouragement! I’m so delighted and honoured that you enjoyed listening to The Ghost Bride, and hope that you enjoy The Night Tiger as well! I will try my best to keep writing 😍
I’m a fan from South Korea! I picked up your book during my visit to Singapore. Recently getting married to a Singaporean-Chinese man, (spoiler alert) I’ve been greatly interested in Malaysia and Singaporean Chinese culture 🙂 The last part of the book, I related to it strongly. Where she chose love, the more difficult but albeit happier choice with a more difficult life, far away from her family. It’s wonderful to have such a culturally rich book, but even more wonderful that while being a fantasy, it dwells with issues that are so real-to-life enough to be relatable. Wonderful book.
Hi Angela! Congrats on your recent marriage! I too loved The Ghost Bride and thought your comments on it being a “fantasy,” but still very relatable to issues of family, love, and the difficult choices life sometimes puts upon us, were spot on!
I am currently reading The Night Tiger (actually listening to the audio book version), which is also set in Malaysia. Although I still have about 2/3s to go, I highly recommend it and have no doubt you too will LOVE the intelligent storytelling, complex characters, and rich Chinese cultural references. Another home run by Yangsze Choo!
Wishing you and your husband all the best!
Pamela E.
Hi Pamela, thank you for picking up The Night Tiger! Happy listening, and I hope you enjoy this one too on your commute! 😍
Hi Angela, many congratulations on your wedding! How lovelyl to hear about your cross-cultural experience. I’m so glad to hear that you enjoyed The Ghost Bride, and hope you continue to find many more wonderful (and delicious!) experiences. 🥰❤️

Hello there! I’m from Brazil and just finished the first season of The Ghost Bride on Netflix. I simply LOVED. I’m yearning for more of Erlang and Li Lan, hope the series gets a second season (that end is killing me!). I’ll also try to use the tv series to learn mandarin.
May I ask you something? I read Journey to the west couple weeks ago and there is a character named Erlang as well in it. Is your Erlang inspired on its?
Last but not less: Will the night tiger be published in Brazil soon? And Will The ghost bride get a second book? (PLEASEEEE);
I also love the brazilian cover of The Ghost Bride.
Thank you so much! I’m so delighted to hear that you enjoyed both the book and the show (and I too love the Brazilian cover—Darkside Books made such a beautiful design!). To answer your questions: 1. Yes, the character Er Lang appears in Chinese mythology in a number of stories, including Journey to the West (where I think he has 3 eyes!). 2. Yes, I believe The Night Tiger will be published in Brazil, also by Darkside Books! I’m so thrilled and looking forward to it!. Thanks again for your kind words! 🥰
Hey Yangsze. Just finished the ghost bride. Big fan of your work. Have to be honest though, that Netflix adaptation did not do your Novel justice in my humble opinion. It felt like a completely different story altogether where all the detailed elements of the supernatural world, the historical critique of traditional Perankan gender roles, and the extensive multidimensional character development had been washed away for a melodramatic telenovela. Are there future plans for adaptations of the night tiger ? If so I hope they are more faithful to your narrative. It has such great potential.
Looking forward to your next book.
Jay
Hi Jay, thank you so much for reading The Ghost Bride, I’m so honored and glad that you enjoyed it! No plans for The Night Tiger screen adaptation yet, but I’ll be sure to update readers if there’s news. In the meantime, I’m plugging away on a third novel, and eating lots of chocolate for “inspiration”… 😅 Thanks for your kind words, and wishing you all the best!
