Thank you – I’m so glad you’re enjoying it! All over Malaysia there are remnants of old buildings, and when I was a child, I visited a derelict Chinese mansion in Penang which was the inspiration for the Lim family mansion – rooms upon empty rooms with grass growing up through the stones and the roof fallen in. I’ve never forgotten it! 🙂

Well your book arrived to Brazil in May of this year (2015) if i not making any mistake, and by the history of the cover already got my attention, i was dying to read the book, but anyway i was not expecting that kind of history … and thanks to you i was very much wrong, the book is simply fantastic, i couldn’t stop reading, you made me stay reading i didn’t have the strength to let it go, the way your writing keeps the reader interested is… i have not words for it! The world you created, the characters, the way they interact i can say i’m in love… and very happy because Li Lan ends up with the guy i was cheering for , Er Lang is one of the best characters ever created, he has something that make us be curious about him!

I just finished reading ‘The Ghost Bride’ last night and I loved it so much that I’m re-reading portions of it today. Your writing style is so descriptive and evocative that it immersed me in a world that I’ve never read before. In fact, before this book, I knew next to nothing about Malaya in the 19th century. Not only did I come to know about the culture and the people but also the wonderfully imaginative after-life ‘Plains of the Dead’. I loved the spunky Li Lan and the relationship she shared with Er Lang! I know I’m repeating what others have requested, but please do write a sequel with more of the delightful banter between these two great characters! That will be another book which I will treasure!

Just wanted to mention something I missed out on my last post: I’m from India and after reading your book, I found a lot of similarities between the Hindu concept of after-life and the Chinese concept. We too leave food offerings for ancestors. Bed and clothing are also offered to the dead as part of the rituals following a family member’s death. Strange how cultures coincide somewhere. I think this is a result of a lot of trade that happened between countries in South East Asia post 15th century. I remember you even mentioned some Indian roadside shopowner in your book.

I always find it tough to come across a book with the right amount of romance and the right amount of supernatural but this book was exactly what I was looking for! It was so satisfying! I also loved that although the main focus of the book was Chinese culture, you mentioned all the other cultures that were around. And now I’m craving more from you! Nothing pleases my soul more than stumbling across an author that captures my attention and speaks straight to my spirit. I sat down after finishing a series of novels, not sure what to do next. I was scrolling through the books on my ereader and The Ghost Bride caught my attention. 3 hours later I was half way done and I couldn’t put it down, my lids were heavy, my arm was asleep and it was close to 4am. I was still reading. I’ve a bit more to go to finish it and I’m already dreading it being over. Such an amazing book. Thank you. Sometimes I think there ought to be an event like EatMoReadMo, in which people loll around for a month, reading and eating as much as possible! 😉 As to what happened to Li Lan and Er Lang, I can only say that they probably went on bickering and having many other adventures. Initially I planned to write a whole extra section for the book which dealt with the court case in the Plains of the Dead, but it would have been too long (see my blog post on what happens when your novel gets out of hand)…but I’m definitely open to writing a sequel in future!

I happened to pick it up on a whim, looking for something to really captivate me and it did. I felt so inspired that I started to draw the faces of Li Lan and Er Lang to the best of your description (Haha!). I am honestly in love the book and hope there will be a second. I felt for Li Lan so much through out the whole book and could relate to her so well. Her character develope was amazing and I hope to see more of their adventures. It has even inspired me to continue to pursue writing. I’ve shared this book with my book-loving friends too! How exciting! I’m so delighted that you’re going to visit Melaka next year! If you have time, check out the night market near Jonker St, as well as the Baba Nyonya Heritage Museum, which is made of 3 shophouses put together – great for historical colour! The other thing I try to do when I’m returning from abroad and don’t have my local stomach resistance yet, is to avoid drinking ice/ice drinks. Strangely enough, my bouts of food poisoning have mostly come from ice drinks. Hot food that’s been boiled is usually no problem. I hope you have a wonderful time in Malaysia 🙂

Greetings from South Florida Ms. Choo! I am writing to let you know I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED listening to your beautifully written book, The Ghost Bride! You are a wonderful storyteller! Your book transported me to a magical place – an alternate reality filled with the perfect blend of romance, intrigue, folklore, history, and intelligence. It was so refreshing that you gave all of your characters, even the not so likable ones, some depth, emotional wounds, and tragic qualities to explain their faulty judgments. I knew it was going to be fabulous from the first few paragraphs, when you went from a colorful description of the politics and blended cultures of Malaysia in the late 1800s to the story of a Chinese festival celebrating celestial lovers involving a cow herd, a weaving maid, and a talking ox. I also really enjoyed the “post script” when you shared your author notes explaining some of the historical meanings behind the Chinese folklores, your creation of the “plane of the dead” and your decisions to stick with the older spellings and dialects from the time period to lend more authenticity to the story line. Very interesting! I am looking forward to reading (listening to) the Night Tiger! I have been in the habit of listening to the audio versions of all the books I have “read” in the last 20 years because I typically have an hour commute to work each way. And in that regard, I thought your voice and the overall audio production of The Ghost Bride was outstanding! It definitely added to my enjoyment of the story. Many thanks!

I’m a fan from South Korea! I picked up your book during my visit to Singapore. Recently getting married to a Singaporean-Chinese man, (spoiler alert) I’ve been greatly interested in Malaysia and Singaporean Chinese culture 🙂 The last part of the book, I related to it strongly. Where she chose love, the more difficult but albeit happier choice with a more difficult life, far away from her family. It’s wonderful to have such a culturally rich book, but even more wonderful that while being a fantasy, it dwells with issues that are so real-to-life enough to be relatable. Wonderful book.

Although I still have about 2/3s to go, I highly recommend it and have no doubt you too will LOVE the intelligent storytelling, complex characters, and rich Chinese cultural references. Another home run by Yangsze Choo!

Hello there! I’m from Brazil and just finished the first season of The Ghost Bride on Netflix. I simply LOVED. I’m yearning for more of Erlang and Li Lan, hope the series gets a second season (that end is killing me!). I’ll also try to use the tv series to learn mandarin.
May I ask you something? I read Journey to the west couple weeks ago and there is a character named Erlang as well in it. Is your Erlang inspired on its?
Last but not less: Will the night tiger be published in Brazil soon? And Will The ghost bride get a second book? (PLEASEEEE);

Yes, the character Er Lang appears in Chinese mythology in a number of stories, including Journey to the West (where I think he has 3 eyes!). 2. Hey Yangsze. Just finished the ghost bride. Big fan of your work. Have to be honest though, that Netflix adaptation did not do your Novel justice in my humble opinion. It felt like a completely different story altogether where all the detailed elements of the supernatural world, the historical critique of traditional Perankan gender roles, and the extensive multidimensional character development had been washed away for a melodramatic telenovela. Are there future plans for adaptations of the night tiger ? If so I hope they are more faithful to your narrative. It has such great potential.
