I just finished reading the advanced reader’s edition of “The Ghost Bride”. I feel so giddy about the ending, but at the same time I’m upset that the book is over. Please tell me you are working on a sequel for Li Lan’s adventures with Er Lang? I’m dying to read more about their adventures together because he only shows up towards the end of the book so there isn’t too much of a focus on him until the end. By the way, kudos on the magnificent story plot. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, you surprised me with a wonderful plot twist. Thank you for a creating such an intriguing world. It was the perfect balance of adventure and romance.

    1. yangszechoo Avatar

Hi Miriam, I’m so happy that you enjoyed the book! Your comment about the ending made me smile, because when I started writing this I had no idea what was an acceptable length for a novel – in fact, I had more plans for the plot (complicated, cunning plans…) – until I realized that the book would be way, way past the acceptable length for even die-hard scifi space operas! A sequel is still up in the air, but as you can see, Li Lan’s story certainly has the potential to continue 🙂

I got to say that this is an amazing book. I’m a Mexican living in Malaysia, I love reading books, and when I saw the excerpt summarizing the book I was drawn into it… I really loved all the Malay words thrown into it that are such a cute reflection of the way Malays communicate. Whenever I was reading the ‘Aiya’ it was putting a smile into my face. It definitely made me understand better the Chinese culture embedded into the country, and how the afterlife beliefs are such an amazing remark of the culture… I would love to see a next book as a sequel, so many things were left without answer specifically related to Er Lang… I think it will be a hit if you make a sequel… Will rate it also in good reads. Congratulations on the great book, I will wait for the next one…

    1. yangszechoo Avatar

      Hi Luz,

Thank you so much! I’m very happy that you enjoyed the book, especially if you’re living in Malaysia. I’d actually intended THE GHOST BRIDE to go on for another section, but then realized that I was waaay past my word count! I’m open to writing a sequel, however.

Thank you for rating it at Goodreads – ratings are so important for unknown newbie writers like me, and I really appreciate it. 🙂

I really enjoyed your novel, The Ghost Bride. First of all the book jacket is lovely, the paper and the design. Your writing is captivating and I just don’t have enough adjectives to describe the book, amazing, fantastic, beautiful and wonderful. You have an unfathomable talent and I hope you are working on another novel. Marilyn McFall, Rock Hill, SC

Finished Ghost Bride last night. What a delight. I enjoy being able to slip into another culture’s world view. Particularly one I’m not familiar with at all. I found it fascinating. I’ve recommend it to a number of my friends.

Would love to read Er Lang’s family’s reaction to Li Lan and hers to them. I know, no small task. Writing a book is hard work. I’m glad you wrote this one. I’ll look for your next one.

    1. yangszechoo Avatar

Thank you, Jeff! I’m so glad you enjoyed it, and yes, I’m also curious to see what his family’s reaction is to her! (In the grand tradition of Asian dramas, probably not good…) 😉

I do hope you’ll be writing a sequel, because I will be greatly anticipating one 😀 I loved that I was able to lose myself so completely in this world. 🙂

I just finished “The Ghost Bride” awhile ago and my mind is still reeling from Li Lan’s adventure. It left me wanting more! Especially Er Lang’s history (okay I’m probably smitten by him along with his legions of women. I was born in the year of the dragon so maybe I’m just attracted to another dragon 😛 ) and how Li Lan will cope being a wife to someone like him.

After reading the book, I told the story to my Mom and she loved it, she wanted to know if you have a Chinese version of the book so she could read it herself. And would it be possible to get a signed copy from you? If you could, please tell me the details on how to acquire one. Much obliged.

I’m glad to find such a treasure of a book that depicts the rich culture, tradition and superstitions of the Chinese. I’m one, so I get what it’s all about. Quite refreshing really. Will definitely recommend this!

    1. yangszechoo Avatar

Ha ha! Er Lang was a lot of fun to write, and I’m so glad you enjoyed him. 😉

And yes, please tell your mum that we’ve recently sold Chinese rights to the book so hopefully, she’ll be able to get a Chinese version soon! As for signed copies, I recently did a book event at http://www.bookpassage.com/ and signed a number of extra copies for them. They told me that if you’d like to buy one online, you can specify a signed copy and they will send it to you. Or, you can call the Ferry Building location and ask them to ship it. Hope that helps!

I just finished reading your wonderful book. Really loved your ending and definitely can see it opened up to more sequels (more romance between Er Lang and Li Lan please!)
I am an Indonesian Chinese immigrant living in Bay area for 20 years. Your book really brings many wonderful memories of South East Asia cultures.

    Couple questions:
    1) It is not clear to me whether Er Lang was in love with Li Lan as much as she loved him in the book. He has not confessed his love to her. I hope he didn’t feel obligated to marry her 😦
    2) I read somewhere that you are working with Sonny Liew to make Ghost Bride as a graphic comic. Do you know when is it going to be published? I would love to add it to my collection. He is a great artist and I want to see his interpretations of Er Lang and Li Lan.

Thank you again for your delightful writing. I will wait for your next sequel and in the meantime I can re-read the Ghost Bride again.

    1. yangszechoo Avatar

Hi Perlee, thank you so much for your kind words! And I enjoyed your questions – as for how Er Lang feels, he’s always been a mysterious fellow, so we’ll have to see. 😉

The comic book with Sonny Liew is in its very early stages but I’m also excited about finding out his interpretation of the characters. Sonny has done a few character cards as giveaways for the book, which I’ll post soon!

    Hi Yangsze,

I am just coming to the end of The Ghost Bride and really wanted to compliment you on your exquisite use of language and beautifully crafted and intricate plot. I read it every morning with my breakfast and find myself thinking about it during the day. I’ve really enjoyed reading this and can’t wait to find out what happens at the end of the story. It’s one of the best new books I’ve read in a long time. The characters are great especially Li Lan and Er Lang who you manage to make really likeable-I hope Li Lan ends up with Er Lang! Amah is another favourite of mine as is Old Wong. I never would have known about this book if I weren’t signed up to Goodreads and am so glad they recommended it in their newsletter. Bizarrely, at times your writing reminds me of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca in terms of the quality and tension. I wish you the very best with your writing career!

  29. Marian Avatar

Hello! Just this morning I finished reading The Ghost Bride. I got it from our small local library in New Mexico. I’ve been savoring it, and appreciating it’s measured pace. I read quite a lot, always have, and there are some books that are like, say, m&ms – fast, fun, sugary and good for eating on the run, and some that are like dark chocolate with a small glass of ruby port…made for lingering and waiting for nuances to come forward while nibbling and sipping. Yours was, of course, the second variety. Ever since I was a little girl, (and I’m closing in on 60 now…) I’ve had an interest in all things “Asian”,(which, back then was referred to as “Oriental”, sorry). I don’t really know the source of this… My family background is Italian on one side and French/Irish/English on the other. But it carried with me and influenced my small girl doodlings and ‘dress ups’, my girlhood collection of paper fans, calligraphy, tiny, beautifully sewn dolls and pincushions, a small wooden peach with a tiny chinese ‘baby’ inside, and once, briefly, a dragon embroidered satin bedspread, given to me by a neighbor and promptly vetoed by my mother–(I imagine she thought it was too ‘old’ for me…I wonder whatever happened to that…insert wistful sighing here). In high school I discovered Pearl Buck and read everything by her, moved on to more contemporary Chinese or Chinese-American women authors. And Jeanne Larsen’s books have been quite fun too. All of these have served to provide a wonderful backdrop for your novel. I felt I’d entered a new but slightly familiar world and enjoyed knowing the history of Chinese people in Malaysia, and the culture created there- and stepping into that world. I loved your creation of the Plains of the Dead! A rich landscape there. Your heroine Li Lan stands out for me, and I so enjoyed being startled by the many ‘mis steps’ she took–and how she recovered her footing in so many surprising ways- sometimes just by stumbling into the ‘right’ person, sometimes by sheer perseverance and stubbornness. But the thing I liked best was the twist in the plot with the introduction of Er Lang. You made both of her suitors whole characters with their own foibles and flaws. And you gave her this maddening ‘choice’, which is unusual among the stories I’ve read. (but seems more real, in terms of what happens when one journeys to other planes!) You gave her a mind that kept growing through her experiences and could not be forced back into where it was before she set out on her journey. To find herself wanting something different after her long odyssey makes sense, but letting her actually make that choice…even as she would leave behind her family, forego the comforts she so longed for during her time away… still, making that bold choice…THAT was what made this story for me. I felt the pangs in the heart. I felt the uncertainty, I felt her annoying attraction to that cheeky fellow Er Lang, felt her weighing all of it. I liked not knowing what she would do until the very end. And now, yes, I want to read the sequel too! I hope she lets you know how she and Er Lang are doing! *grin* –and that you let us know, too. Thank you for this story. and p.s. I’m really enjoying reading your blog too!

Write as often as you can, whenever you have the time, even if it’s just a thought jotted down on two lines of a notebook. Hey, Yangsze. I have just finished reading your book “The Ghost Bride” and it was truly a wonderful read. Though I am from Malaysia and a Chinese, I don’t really know the Chinese cultures related to the religious part and also their ancestor worship. So when I saw your book sitting on the shelf at MPH book store, the title actually drew me in. This is because I have heard of ghost marriages before and I knew it was practised long time ago usually in the more traditional Chinese families. After reading the endpage, I just HAD TO buy your book. I am hoping that the sequel to Li Lan’s adventures would be coming out soon?? I will definitely buy it once it is published. Kudos to your book!! “The Ghost Bride” is now one of my favourite books and I am going to tell my other friends to buy and read it too.

Thanks very much for writing the book! The story will stay with me.

    1. yangszechoo Avatar

Thank you so much! I’m so honored and delighted that you should feel that way (and are accosting people!) about THE GHOST BRIDE.

As for writing tips, I often find that I need large blocks of time, e.g. 2-3 uninterrupted hours. Not because I can write non-stop, but because I need some clear mental space to think about things (like plot twists and oh dear, I forgot that I left that character in peril 2 chapters ago)… This is very challenging with screaming children underfoot, so I’m often forced to write late at night, or when they are thankfully at school. The other thing that’s been helpful to me is making time to be alone, even if it’s just going to the grocery store. There’s good thinking time in between the brussels sprouts and cheese, and it’s often much more productive than sitting in front of the computer and surfing for things like, um, bunnies available for adoption…

Lastly, if you are feeling desperate you can always go on a writing retreat. I’ve not personally been able to finagle this (yet) but I know a number of writers who say there’s nothing like going off for a weekend by themselves. And sometimes that big push is all you need to start puttering on nicely.

I hope that helps – finding time to write is a daily battle, and you have my full sympathy and encouragement! 🙂

Thank you very much for your reply! It’s so very nice to find that all you say sounds familiar, because it means that yes! It can be done! It’ll just take forever, so that might be were I am right now. Plus minus the talent, of course. 🙂

Thank you also for being so accessible!

Thank you so much for you wonderful book, I could not put it down! I haven enjoyed any novel so much in years. I loved the Li Lan’s choice at the end. Now that it is over I miss the beautifully crafted characters! I truly hope you do a sequel. I am so curious what happens to our heroin after the end of the book.

      Hi Kristen,

Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m so glad to hear that you were happy with the ending (which was rewritten several different ways) and that you enjoyed the characters. I will try my best to keep writing. 🙂

    Hi Yangsze,
I left a comment for you a few days back but not sure why it has disappeared, that’s why I’m leaving a comment again.
I have just finished reading the Ghost Bride and I love the book so much.
I especially love it when Li Lan is with Er Lang.
Are you going to write a sequel? I really hope that you will. Cant wait to read what happen to both of them.

    1. yangszechoo Avatar

      Hi Sin Hui,

Thank you for your lovely comment – I think it’s still there (on another page, under “About Yangsze”). I’ve replied to you there but am so glad that you enjoyed the book and will try my best to keep writing! 😉

Hi sorry to annoy you with fan mail but I have just finished reading your book “Ghost Bride.” I thought It was amazing and couldn’t stop reading. When I finished it I felt like falling to my knees and screaming “Noooooo!!!” (a little dramatic, but I really enjoyed!)
    – So I have some questions…
    1. Have you written any other books?
    2. Is there a sequel to the Ghost bride?
    3. I got a bit confused at the end of the book…..
So does Li Lan wait 50 years to be with Er Lang or Ditch Tian Bai there and then.

    1. yangszechoo Avatar

      Hi Alex,

Thank you so much – I’m delighted that you enjoyed it! To answer your questions:
      1. The Ghost Bride is my first book but I am currently working (very, very hard – just in case my agent is reading this!) on a second novel. I’m excited about it and hopefully readers will enjoy it too!
      2. There is no sequel to The Ghost Bride – yet. But I’m definitely open to writing another one in the future.
      3. SPOILER ALERT (for those who haven’t read the book). Yes, she decided to run off and not wait for 50 years. Which I’m sure was a decision that had some repercussions, but perhaps that’s for a second book… 😉

    Hi Yangsze,

I wanted to write and say how much I enjoyed your book. I am an avid book reader and I rarely do I go back to read the books again, but your book was an exception. I think I have reread some parts more than twice 🙂

On my way to work this morning, I keep thinking how great it would be if you were to write a sequel. And I’m so glad many of your fans have voiced the same sentiment! I really hope you do write one as reading it will be something I look forward to very much.

    1. yangszechoo Avatar

      Hi Mary,

I’m so tickled to hear that you enjoyed it enough to reread – what an honor! Thank you for your kind encouragement, I’ll try my best to keep writing and hopefully finish my second book (it’s getting to be a rather long one) as soon as possible. It’s another strange tale, this time set in 1931 colonial Malaya when they had trains and electricity, but still lots of ghosts…. 😉

    Hi Yang Sze!

I found out about your book randomly through Coursera and fell in love with it immediately. It was such a coincidence since I’m currently writing a comparative study thesis on Chinese Cubans and Chinese Malaysian. It made me so happy to know that there are people writing about Chinese Malaysians 🙂 You make our country and ethnic proud 😉

P.S I’m also a 4th generation Chinese Malaysian currently pursuing my studies at Philly 🙂 Let me know if you’re every at the east coast or Malaysia!

    1. yangszechoo Avatar

      Hi Carmen,

Thank you so much – I’m so glad that you enjoyed it! And how interesting that you’re writing a thesis on Chinese Cubans – my husband’s family are Chinese Panamanians, and it’s fascinating to see how the Chinese diaspora has hung on to much of its culture and traditions! I have no current book events on the East Coast, but will definitely post on FB if I do. I wish you all the best on your studies. 😉

I recently finished your book, The Ghost Bride, and may I just say, your book was absolutely amazing. I hung onto every word and I could not put your book down. I had to do a project in my marketing course where I had to find a new and up in coming artist, but the bookworm I am, I changed it to author. I saw your listing for the new book and I chose yours. After reading the summary of the book I was very intrigued and wanted to read it when the book came out. I just finished your book last night, and I was blown away with the end events. This book will always be my favorite. I was also wondering is there is going to be a second book after the Ghost Bride. I’m dying to know what happens next!
    Thank you,
    Lacey J.

      Hi Lacey,

Thank you so much for your kind words – I’m delighted that you enjoyed it and I hope it worked out for your marketing course project! At the moment, there isn’t a sequel to The Ghost Bride, as I’ve been busy working on my next novel, another strange tale set in colonial Malaya, but I’m definitely open to writing one in future. Best wishes on your marketing course project! 🙂

I’m curious to know what this path that Li Lan has chosen would have in store for her and am dying to learn more about Er Lang! I can see what you meant by him taking over poor Tian Bai… I felt the same way reading the book.
